Being healthy is about more than what you eat and how much you exercise. Sometimes what a mum needs to stay healthy is much simpler and easier than you’d think – and we’re not just talking about new mums – mums of any age who have kids of any age can do these things to stay healthy.

Keep this list of tips handy and whenever you just aren’t feeling so great, give yourself a little pick-me-up.

  • Me time is a right, not a privilege! Take some time, every day, to have a cuppa and read a magazine, or even, god willing, go shopping by yourself! Also, taking a few minutes to do your hair nicely and even makeup in the morning will help you feel good.
  • Keep the time you spend on yourself separate from time with the family, and keep time with your partner separate from family as well. Each relationship you have is different from all the others, so spend time individually on each relationship you have.
  • If it suits your household, get a cleaner! Whether it’s a regular thing, or just so you can have a day off, hand that duty over to someone else, then break off a piece of chocolate and watch them do the work.
  • Sleep! And when you’re done doing that, get some more sleep. In fact, get so much sleep that you never feel tired when you wake up. It’s probably the best way to keep you feeling good.
  • A support network is a must. A group of friends and family that you talk to every day – whether you talk about serious issues or what was on telly last night, keep that network thriving so you’ll always have someone to go to if times get a little rough.
  • Be open about any difficulties you’re having, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The support group you’re maintaining will help you out. There’s a good chance that your friends and family – especially parents – have experienced what you are, so tell them and ask for advice.
  • Your kids’ needs are important, but try to remember that your body needs nearly all the same things as theirs do. Keep your body as healthy, nourished, and happy as you’d like your kids’ to be, and that way you’ll all feel better.
  • Help someone with something little – holding a door open, or helping someone get groceries  out of the car gives you a positive boost because you’re doing a good deed.
  • Make sure you always have something to look forward to. From a nice holiday to a simple dinner with friends, always be excited about something that is going to happen.
  • Acknowledge your achievements. To get to the point where you have kids is a huge accomplishment in itself, so there must be MANY more things you’ve done well. Keep track of all your achievements and know that you are successful.
  • Appreciate every positive thing that happens each day. Even if it’s as small as your child’s smile, it will help up your mood even that little bit.
  • Set an alarm on your phone to go off at the same time every day with little reminder that you’re a great mum, that you’re doing well, or a little list of the great things you’ve accomplished. This is especially helpful to new mums, but also can lift the spirits of a mum of any age.

Don’t let yourself get down about life – stay healthy and balanced and it will benefit not only you, but your family, too.
