Summer is on its way and while it is one of the most celebrated seasons with long days and balmy evenings, it can also be the most expensive.

The culprit in this expensive debacle is cooling costs; they are the single biggest drain on summer energy bills. But, whilst energy experts say air-conditioning make up for about 40 per cent of our bills, there are simple strategies you can adopt to save money.

Energy comparison service iSelect’s spokeswoman, Laura Crowden, says most people are prepared for large winter energy bills but are taken by surprise by big summer bills.

  • Tip One: It is worthwhile having your air conditioner serviced at the start of summer, as nothing drains electricity more than a badly functioning air conditioner.
  • Tip Two: Consider using fans to move air around initially, before you go for air-conditioning. Did you know ceiling fans are just as effective as air conditioners when the temperature is below 30 degrees? And ceiling fans only cost 2c per hour to run.”
  • Tip Three: Set your air conditioner between 23 and 26 degrees and remember that every one degree lower you set your air conditioner will be using about 10 per cent more electricity to power it.
  • Tip Four: Rather than simply turning an appliance off, try turning it off at the wall as this can cut costs by 5 per cent.
  • Tip Five: Ensure you are with an energy provider that is best suited to your household needs and speak to an energy expert like iSelect who will make the energy comparision process easier.
