We’ve all seen the tough side of Commando Steve.
He’s the one behind the dark sunnies using his military training to motivate contestants on The Biggest Loser Australia.
But there’s a softer side to Commando Steve as well. He’s a dad and he knows full well the benefit of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Commando Steve is a man of few words, but when he speaks you better listen, because he’s got some wisdom to share with Aussie parents …
Q: It isn’t easy to find time to exercise when you’ve got children! Do you have any tips on combining fitness and kids?
Getting outdoors with your children is a step in the right direction. Take them to the park and let them play whilst you do a quick 20 minute workout. Combine some squats and push-ups together with a 20 meter shuttle run and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier you! Chances are your children will follow your example and want to join in.
Q: How important is it for parents to look after their own health and fitness?
It’s imperative, children mimic our actions and choices. We need to lead by example. We will also be more conscious about our choices and decisions.
Q: What exercises can new mums start off with when their babies are still young?
They can do just about anything, body weight exercises like squats, push-ups and burpees are great, combined with a good hit of cardio mixed in.
Q:You’re known for your hardline motivation techniques but how do you motivate a child who doesn’t want to be active?
It’s all about leading by example and consistency, we need to stop allowing children to rule the roost and take control.
Q: What type of activities do you enjoy with your children?
I love getting outdoors, going to the park, beach, bush walking and camping.
Q: What can parents do to ensure their children grow into active healthy teens and adults?
Instill good habits and boundaries from an early age, lead by example!
Q: Do you have any general tips for any of the men reading who are about to become fathers?
It’s going to be tough but worth it, be the best version of yourself you can possibly be.
