The annual list of the Top 100 Baby Names in Australia has just been released and it looks like we are royally influenced!
Charlotte – the name of Prince William and Princess’s Catherine’s daughter born in May 2015 – is now the number one girls’ name in Australia (with 1737 occurrences) – knocking Olivia from the top spot.
The number one boys’ name is Oliver (with 2283 occurrences) – the same as last year.
New names in the Top 10 were Lachlan (knocking out Alexander) and Grace (knocking out Ruby).
The Top 100 Baby Names list is released each year by social researchers McCrindle. This list, released in May 2016, is compiled from data collected in 2015.
There were also some new names appearing in the Top 100 this year. For boys we now have Spencer, Jesse, Arlo, Harley, Darcy, Jett and Lewis making an appearance. For girls we have Aurora, Billie, Eve, Daisy, Aisha, Leah, Gabriella, Maryam and Maggie.
Disappearing from the top 100 are Bailey, Mitchell, David, Aaron, John, Phoenix and Anthony. As well as Lexi, Jade, Indie, Pippa, Amelie, Amber, Elise, Natalie and Lacey.
The biggest jumps were made by Harvey, which climbed 31 spots on the list to 53rd, and Theodore, up 30 spots to 66th. The biggest drop on the boys’ list was for Caleb, which fell 20 spots down to 87th. For girls, Penelope and Piper both increased by 17 spots while Hayley saw the biggest drop – 25 places to 94th – followed by Bella, which dropped 20 places to rank 77th.
