Top 100 baby names in Australia Charlotte and Oliver are once again the number one baby names in Australia, according to the latest Top 100 Baby Names list, released this week.

The list, compiled by social researchers McCrindle, brings together data from the Australian states and territories to show the most popular names from 2018.

There were 1673 baby girls named Charlotte in 2018 and 2134 baby boys named Oliver. This is the fourth year Oliver and Charlotte have occupied the top spots together.

Charlotte took the top position from Olivia in 2015 — the same year Princess Charlotte was born. Oliver has been the number one boys’ name in Australia since it overtook Jack in 2013.

Other interesting baby names trends in 2018

  • New names in the top 100 boys’ name list this year are Nathan (84), Maxwell (85), Christian (92), Phoenix (93), Leonardo (96) and Theo (99).
  • Boys’ names to have left the top 100 this year are Felix, Fletcher, Nathaniel, Dominic, Aaron and Harley.
  • New names in the top 100 girls’ name list this year are Thea (77), Adeline (82), Alyssa (94), Hayley (96), Pippa (98) and Clara (100).
  • Girls’ names to have left the top 100 this year are Lilly, Holly, Isabel, Peyton, Madeline and Jessica.
  • Charlie is the only name to appear on both lists (85th for girls and 14th for boys).
  • We continue to be royally influenced when it comes to baby names. Since Prince George was born in 2013 the name George has jumped 37 places. Princess Charlotte’s birth in 2015 made the name Charlotte number one on the girls’ list. Prince Louis was born in 2018 and his name has jumped 14 places since 2017.
  • Overall we are choosing from a wider range of baby names. In 2018 only 10 per cent of babies born in New South Wales were given a top 10 name. In 1957, 30 per cent of babies born in NSW were given a top 10 name.
  • The names to have had the biggest rises since 2010 are Leo, Hugo, Hunter, Mason and George for band Willow, Violet, Audrey, Ivy and Sofia for girls.
