LEGO DUPLO sponsoredMy children have a lot of toys. A LOT. So many, in fact, that they now have their own room – the toys, not the kids. The kids share a room, the toys get their own. Is that weird? Actually, don’t answer that.

I love the toyroom (there are no more toys in my living areas and I can shut the door on the mess) but I’m not in love with all of the toys within.

The jigsaw puzzles that they tip on the floor but never do. The cheap half-broken stuff that they still play with so I can’t bring myself to throw away. The chalk that makes us all sneeze and always ends up on my couch in the shape of the offending child’s handprint.

But there’s one thing in that toyroom that I love. And I love that my kids love it too.

LEGO DUPLO… how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

1. YOU KEEP BOTH MY KIDS BUSY AT THE SAME TIME

There aren’t many toys that will keep a four-year-old and a two-year-old happily playing together for more than a few oh-so-precious minutes. But my twosome will happily play with LEGO DUPLO for ages! This is probably because each LEGO DUPLO set is targeted to a specific age group. For example, my two-year-old daughter loves the Toddler Build and Boat Fun set (1 1/2 to 3 years) and my four-year-old son will happily steal parts from it when he goes ‘off-plan’ to create what he calls a “crane digger aeroplane truck” – an engineering marvel that truly has to be seen to be appreciated.

2. YOU HELP MY PRESCHOOLER LEARN

It is pretty obvious when my son is playing with the Number Train (ages 2-5) that he is learning about numbers – reinforcing his counting skills and learning to recognise numerals. What isn’t as obvious are all the other skills he is picking up along the way. LEGO teaches problem-solving, creativity, fine-motor skill development, hand-eye coordination, critical thinking, planning, three-dimensional thinking, organisation, plus much more. I can’t think of too many other toys in the toyroom that can do all that.

3. YOU ARE FUN FOR ALL AGES… EVEN MINE!

Usually when both my children are quiet (in a good way, not a ‘flooding the bathroom’ or ‘drawing on the walls’ way) I congratulate myself on a job well done then sneak off for a quiet cup of coffee in another room. But when LEGO is involved I’m more likely to be down there with them, building a dinosaur, a two-storey house or an even bigger “crane digger aeroplane truck”. You can’t see me in the next photo but I’m down there too…

4. YOU ARE MANY TOYS, BUT YOU ARE JUST ONE TOY.

The beauty of LEGO DUPLO is that each time you receive more you can just store it with the DUPLO you already have. No need to buy extra storage each time your child has a birthday! You can pay it forward by buying LEGO as presents for other kids too (easy to do considering the range in sizes and prices available). I love that LEGO is so easy to store and, even though it has many parts, it is easy to clean up after too. No need to put it all back together like those pesky jigsaw puzzles I do most days!

5. YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER

Our LEGO DUPLO collection still looks brand new. Not one piece has ever been broken or even damaged. This is one toy I’ll be keeping for the grandkids…
