14 weeks pregnant – development guide

Your body

With your pregnancy glow in full swing, you may feel much more like being active. Exercising in pregnancy is so beneficial but remember that the relaxin in your body softens your joints and ligaments in preparation for birth, so you may have to consider this when planning to exercise. In general you’ll be able to do most exercises you did before you were pregnant but there are a few exercises to avoid in pregnancy.

Pregnant woman with visible uterus and fetus week 14Through the first trimester, you didn’t need to increase your food intake at all. But, during the second and third trimester, your energy needs increase by approximately 600 kJ per day.

Your uterus is approximately the size of a softball and you should be able to feel it through your abdomen. The top of your uterus is called the fundus and you may start to hear your healthcare provider use this term more. You may start to notice the linea nigra – this is the dark line that runs down the middle of your belly. The line usually eventually fades after the birth of your baby. Some say the linea nigra can predict the sex of your baby.

Your baby

Sized approximately 7-9cm (head to rump), your baby weighs between 25-28 grams. Lanugo – soft, downy hair covering and protecting your baby’s body – has started and grow and will stay with them until just after birth.

Weekly development of a human fetus - week 14Your baby’s reproductive organs are developing – for boys it’s the prostate gland and for girls it’s the ovaries. Despite the development of your baby’s lungs, the placenta is their source of oxygen. The lungs won’t function as ours do (with air) until they are born.

You should be fitted for a maternity bra when you notice changes in the size of your breasts–usually before you’re 16 weeks pregnant. Maternity bras aren’t just bigger cup sizes–they’re specially designed to support your breasts as they grow plus they have drop-down cups for when you’re breastfeeding.
